Are you ever heard poor man's WiFi?

One of my friends make a WiFi connection from USB adapters and cookware reflector. Because his laptop is old model and no WiFi ready. So he make up in idea of "Poor Man's WiFi" to not waste his laptop. Because the all new model laptop now are WiFi ready.
